Archaeological Field Director/ Principal Investigator

POWER Engineers, Inc., is seeking a full-time Senior Archaeological Principal Investigator for a leadership position in our Environmental Division – Resource Assessment and Mapping, Western Cultural Resources Department in California. This is salaried position with a pay range between $85,000 and $115,000.

Roles and Responsibilities

As a Principal Investigator you will help build the environmental project team focused on transmission/distribution lines, fire hardening, renewable energy, transportation projects, environmental surveys, NEPA/CEQA analyses, and permitting services. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to lead archaeological survey work on federal and other public lands in California and write reports for federal and state agency submittal. Projects may involve extended periods of fieldwork in remote areas including other West Coast states. Experience working with and executing projects regulated by CEQA as well as permittable experience on federal lands throughout the State is highly desirable. Remote monitoring experience and willingness to participate in these projects is also highly desirable. The position would report to one of our California office locations with the ability to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location.

Responsibilities will include technical support, writing support, and providing cultural resource management (CRM) expertise to the development and execution of projects in California and surrounding states. The PI should possess an advanced understanding of anthropological and archaeological field techniques in connection with locating, testing, recording, mapping, and evaluating archaeological sites and supporting field surveys. Conducting field surveys (pedestrian and shovel test surveys) using topographic maps, aerial photographs, and ESRI Field Maps and other GPS data collection software will be a regular part of this role.

This position requires the ability to work long hours, in difficult or remote environments, and in varying weather conditions. The position will also require the ability to work with and lead groups composed of diverse personalities. A positive attitude and ability to accept direction is a must, as well as the ability to work independently and to fully plan and execute personal assignments with minimal instruction. Effective communication skills are important for success in this role and will be called on frequently.

Required Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree in Archeology, Anthropology, or a related discipline

  • 5+ years of previous California CRM field experience

  • Skill in planning, writing, and reviewing cultural resource reports in support of Class III, NEPA, and CEQA reports.

  • Knowledge and understanding of equipment, technology, and paperwork used in the recording and documenting of archeological sites and artifacts.

  • Developing, planning, and executing all aspects of cultural resource projects in support of CEQA and Section 106 undertakings in California

  • Executing cultural resource file searches within the California CHRIS system

  • Ability to learn and communicate local cultural history and material in new project areas.

  • Ability to work independently, and to fully plan and execute personal assignments with minimal instruction.

  • Knowledge and willingness to learn, apply, and communicate POWER company health and safety standards.

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability to successfully lead teams composed of diverse personalities of varying skill levels.

  • Ability and willingness to support non-cultural Company personnel in the execution of larger projects that may include a diverse array of environmental resources or engineering challenges.

  • Ability to work long hours in varied environments and in varying weather condition.

  • Effectively and respectfully communicate with team members, managers, and other agency representatives.

  • California Residence is strongly preferred.

Preferred Education/Experience

  • M.A/M.S or PhD. in Archaeology, Historic Architecture, History or Anthropology or other related field.

  • 5 years or more in a leadership role in Cultural Resource Management that required project planning, project execution, personnel management, report writing, and project oversight.

  • Experience in utility transmission, pipeline, and renewable energy projects

  • Staff mentorship experience

  • Experience developing cost estimates, scopes of work, and schedules for complex field surveys and larger CRM projects.

  • Experience with block and linear survey, background research and leading field crews

  • CPR/First Aid/OSHA certifications, or experience with these certifications.

  • Demonstrated writing skills. Please provided 2 to 3 copies of reports or other writing samples for review.

Salary DOE: The pay range for this position is $85,000-$115,000 per year; however, base pay may be higher or lower depending on the candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This figure does not include additional compensation such as health benefits, vacation, 401k, etc.
