A Brief Summary of This Position

This position is to insure that the products produced by Tulsa Operations and all parts received from the other venders meets or exceeds the quality requirements of our customers. It is to serve as a catalyst to accomplish the producing of product that is constantly improving in quality, safety and lean production. This position will be expected to always demonstrate the highest levels of integrity, passion and safety that will be cultivated in to the team you lead as well as the departments you interact with.

This position is accountable to the Quality Supervisor. The Lead Inspector will quality check the assembly of fabricated materials by dimensional checks, visual inspection of welds and conduct N.D.T. testing by ultrasonic and mag particle processes, with Level II knowledge. Responsible for coordination of the Quality team to meet production goals.

Essential Functions

  • Lead Inspector makes decision in the area of codes and specifications

  • Demonstrates a commitment to quality, productivity, safety and environmental policies

  • Responsible for communication within the work group ensuring teamwork and a productive work environment

  • Communicating and working with the production supervisors and leads to maintain workflow of the area and report issues to the Quality supervisor

  • Perform nondestructive examination (NDE) on material using methods including: visual, magnetic partial, and ultrasonic testing

  • Evaluate examination results and determine if material meets contract specifications

  • Interprets reports for NDT testing and passes or rejects quality acceptance

  • Responsible for generating and maintaining NDE reports and records for company and contractors

  • Completes Quality Red Flag report daily by compiling quality team notes for their work shift

  • Authority to reject material, stop work in process, etc., to minimize financial loss and risk of customer dissatisfaction

  • Works under conditions with accurate performance and completion of work within set time limits

  • Accountable and responsible for essential tools and equipment provided along with the maintenance of these tools and equipment

  • Responsible for time management of employees on shift using Time Clock Manager system

  • Actively participate in department safety, demonstate excellent safety practices and behaviours which conform to all Valmont safety policies and procedures

  • Timely and consistent attendance

  • Able to perform the physical aspects of the inspection processes

  • Other duties as required

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • No less than two years working in a Quality Control Department

  • Must be Level II qualified in Ultrasonic Shear Wave Flaw Detection and Magnetic Particle Inspection

  • Must have or be able to obtain the American Welding Society’s Certified Welding Inspector certificate within six to twelve months of hire

  • Have a full understanding and the ability to explain the Valmont Quality System, Procedures, Utility Pole Drawings, Customer Specification and Work Instructions

  • The ability to understand and train how to use the measuring tools and non-destructive testing equipment of the Quality Department

  • Must be flexible to work extended hours including all shifts that Tulsa Operations may run

  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results in yourself and the people you lead

  • The ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel

  • Must demonstrate a high awareness for safety at all times

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Four years’ experience in a Quality Department

  • Two years previous experience working in Valmont Utility

  • AWS - CWI

  • NACE Coating Inspector Level 1

  • Associate degree in welding, NDT or engineering related studies

  • Lean manufacturing training

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work will be performed in production areas in addition to possible travel to other locations. The incumbent is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. This position will be exposed to all hazards located at manufacturing sites including noise, fumes, excessive heat/cold, dust, welding arc, all chemicals associated with the manufacturing areas, fire, smoke, unstable debris and confined spaces. Environment is fast-paced and demanding most of the time.

The employee is frequently required to use hands to fingers, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrist rests. The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds in working with large files, binders, computer equipment and shop equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
