State of Utah - Jobs Environmental Scientist in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

The Department of Environmental Quality is seeking an Environmental Scientist in the Division of Air Quality s Major Source Compliance Section. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series.    Job Description  As the Environmental Scientist you will typically:

  • Conduct inspections/audits and determine compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Perform technical reading/writing for understanding and evaluating compliance with state and federal air quality regulations.
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing with internal and external customers.
  • Work both independently and in a team environment.

Ideal Candidate  The ideal person for this position will possess:

  • At least 3 years of experience working with federal and state air quality rules,performing compliance inspections,stack testing,and/or continuous emissions monitoring.
  • Experience with technical report writing.
  • Excellent communication skills,both verbal and in writing,which may sometime involve difficult people.
  • Familiarity with environmental rulemaking and permit writing. 
  • The willingness and ability to travel in remote areas of the state and work independently.

* Job Series* The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Scientist I with a salary range of $23.93 - $35.94,an Environmental Scientist II with a salary range of $28.16 - $42.30 per hour,or an Environmental Scientist III with a salary range of $33.14 - $49.79 per hour. * Preferences *  Preference may be given to those with:

  • a bachelor s or higher degree in one of the following: environmental sciences,environmental health sciences,biological sciences,or physical sciences;
  • to those with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Reference Method 9 (Visible Emission Observation) Certification;
  • OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and paid professional employment directly related to the above tasks.

Work Location This position may be eligible for an in-office,remote or hybrid/flexible work schedule after an initial training period or several weeks of in-office training during the first few months of employment. Our office is located 195 North 1950 West,Salt Lake City,Utah. A position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason.  Note: Under Administrative Rule R13-4 all work must be performed within the State of Utah.
