Job Summary and Qualifications

  • The duties of an Armed Security Officer shall include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing a highly visible uniformed law enforcement presence at Horizon Medical Center, with an emphasis on the emergency department, for the purpose of deterring and preventing criminal behavior.

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of patients, employees, physicians, and visitors and the Horizon property

  • Be responsible for establishing and maintaining positive relationships with employees, physicians and customers

  • Use interpersonal communication skills while assisting patients, visitors, and employees

  • Attend all mandatory in-service trainingParticipates in Performance Improvement activities to assure continuous Quality Improvement. Maintains cultural and diversity awareness when dealing with patients, visitors, co-workers and all other customers. Promotes a supportive, team-work oriented environment. Fulfills departmental responsibilities with the long-range plan, mission, vision and values of Horizon Medical Center.

Position Qualifications

· Must be a Police Officer or Sheriff’s Deputy with a favorable background check and negative drug and TB test.

Performance Expectations

· Must demonstrate the ability to perform specific competencies as listed on the Competency Validation Checklist.

· Meets mutually-agreed upon performance goals and objectives as listed on the Performance Management Plan.

Additional guidelines include but are not limited to:

· The primary place for the armed security officer to be is in the guard room in front of the outside main door entrance to the E.R.

· When unarmed security requires assistance, armed security is then to relieve them in order for them to do their assigned checks. After unarmed security returns, likewise, armed security is to return to the vicinity of the guard room unless requested to stay by unarmed security. Please send a detailed report regarding any incident.

· Armed Security Officers are not to go inside registration (HIPPA) unless requested by staff. Please send a detailed report stating the reasons and staff member name any time an officer goes into registration for an extended stay.

· The E.R. radio is operable and is to be worn at all times and monitored.

· It is acceptable to walk through the E.R. but return back to the vicinity of the guard room as soon as possible.

· If Armed Security is called to another part of the hospital, please inform the charge nurse and registration prior to leaving (unless it's an emergency). Please send a detailed report when armed security has to leave the assigned area. (The first line of defense is the front door but armed security has to be there in order to see the possible threat).

· Additional tasks may be required as determined by department heads.

Work Environment

· Operate within the confines of the hospital building and grounds.

· Use equipment related to profession if needed for protection of employees, patients, visitors or self.

· At all times during shift, follow dress code as an Armed Security Officer consisting of respective department’s patrol uniform, complete with patrol duty gear.

· Potential exposure to the risk of blood borne diseases and possible contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances (accident, injuries, and illness).

· Remain accessible to other hospital personnel at all times while on duty with the use of a two-way radio provided by Horizon Medical Center.

· Must be flexible, work at a fast pace and manage several projects at a time.

· Accurately and thoroughly document all perceived security threats and submit in a Shift Activity Report prior to end of shift.

· Frequent interdisciplinary contact with other departments and health care professionals.

· Assist unarmed security personnel with management, control and observation

· May be required to work weekday, weekends and holidays.

· May be required to leave early and rotate days off as necessary.

· There will be 4 – six hour shifts per day that will need to be filled. The “next schedule” call list will be determined by those days that are checked. For instance, if an employee has to miss work on Thursday 6p-12a, the employees who agreed to work that particular day will be called first to fill the position. The next missed day will go the next officer in line and so forth.

Physical Abilities

· May lift or push supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. from locations at or above shoulder level; required to obtain assistance for lifting more than 50 lbs.

· Must use proper body mechanics while moving and lifting

· Ability to reach above shoulders without difficulty and perform several tasks simultaneously

· Manual dexterity and mobility needed for frequent reaching, stooping and bending.

· Potential prolonged standing or walking
