Summary:

Description:

The Work Study Student is a member of the teaching team who assists with the implementation of classroom activities, under the direct supervision of an Assistant Teacher, Teacher, or Lead Teacher. Work Study Students perform daily routine tasks that establish the basic foundation for a healthy, safe, and educational environment.

Accountability:

• The Work Study Student reports to the Lead Teacher or Program Director.

• Is aware of necessary information to ensure the safety and well-being of the children

• Maintains an orderly learning environment

To advance physical and intellectual competence

• Supports a balance between child-initiated and teacher-initiated activities

• Supports a balance between quiet and active learning activities

• Uses equipment and materials for indoor and outdoor play that promotes children’s physical development

• Supports an integrated curriculum that meets the needs of individual children

• Supports experiences that promote language and literacy development

• Supports activities that promote the acquisition of math and science concepts

• Assist with extra-curricular programs such as music, gymnastics, swimming, etc.

To support social and emotional development and provide positive guidance

• Supports activities that develop positive self-esteem

• Supports activities that develop social skills

• Supports culturally diverse experiences

• Uses and promotes positive guidance techniques

• Supports a wide variety of creative and expressive activities

• Supports routines with smooth transition periods

• Communicates with children at their developmental level

• Greets parents at pick up and drop off times

• Supports a variety of ways that families can participate in the program

• Engages ongoing staff development to improve personal and professional goals

• Supports the professional growth and development of colleagues by sharing materials and information and providing helpful feedback and encouragement

• Attends staff meetings, workshops, and in-service training provided by the center

Personal Qualities and Special Job Characteristics:

Must be a Rush University Student. Must be physically able to perform the job of an early childhood teacher (e.g. able to lift children and/or equipment up to 40lbs; able to stoop, bend, sit and stand for extended periods of time). Must have a warm, supportive attitude toward children. Must be reliable. Must be flexible in receiving assignments or adapting to changes in the program. Must be willing to accept supervision to improve performance. Must be willing to perform other duties as required.
