Purpose/Introduction

Chevron Phillips Chemical Company is currently seeking a Polymer Rheologist to join the Polymer Science Group within the Research & Technology (R&T) organization in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The incumbent should have relevant training and experiences in applying different rheology techniques in characterizing polyethylene and/or other polymeric materials.

The Polymer Science Group engages in R&D activities in areas related to polymer characterization, polymer rheology, polymer processing, polymer stabilization, polymer finishing, and development of structure-property-processing relationships. The incumbent will provide expert technical support to various groups and customers to solve challenges related to characterization of polyethylene (PE) resins and products using rheology-based techniques. In addition, this individual will participate in various research and product development projects and support manufacturing and pilot plant activities. #HPCP

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate leadership in safety. Participate in all safety, environmental and sustainability initiatives set forth by the company, and strive to uphold and improve the safety culture of the company

  • Actively participate in the maintenance and troubleshooting of the rheometers and the related logistics of the rheology laboratory

  • Constantly strive to improve the capability and productivity of the rheology laboratory

  • Provide training to the research technicians on data collection, processing, archival and instrument maintenance

  • Work with pilot plant and manufacturing plant engineers to identify the root-cause of off-spec products and help to find solution.

Responsibilities (continued)

  • Develop rheology test methods to find unique solutions to product development challenges.

  • Support multidisciplinary groups in securing and defending patents with a goal to maintain the competitive advantage of the company

  • Participate in current research and development initiatives of the company, contribute to the existing research projects of the group, and provide individual research contributions.

  • Disseminate research findings through internal and external publications and presentations.

  • Build and maintain relationships with peers, customers, and business partners to tackle the processing challenges of the external customers

Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. degree in polymer science (chemistry or physics), polymer engineering or material science and engineering with at least 2 years of industry experience

  • A minimum of 2 years of working experience and/or training in polyolefin and/or other polymer characterization using rheology techniques

  • Sound theoretical knowledge in polymer rheology and strong experimental skill in rheology techniques including, but not limited to, dynamic, capillary and extensional rheology

  • Proven expertise in polyolefin characterization using rheology techniques and related method development experience supported by publications in peer-reviewed journals

  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and using structure-property-processing relationships in polyolefin and/or other polymer systems

  • Ability to respond to fast evolving challenges and manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Excellent written computing and data processing skills, ability to incorporate AI and machine-learning tools in research, and a familiarity with Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. degree in polymer science (chemistry or physics), polymer engineering or material science and engineering with specific focus on polyethylene characterization using rheology techniques

  • Job-related work experience in a polyethylene R&D and/or industry setting
